Finally, Odisha Health Minister Atanu Sabyasachi Resigns
Bhubaneswar: Odisha Health Minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak on Friday tendered his resignation to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in the aftermath of the SUM Hospital fire tragedy, that left 25 patients dead.
The Chief Minister has accepted his resignation letter.
In the wake of the SUM Hospital major fire tragedy on Monday (October 17) night that claimed 19 lives on the very night and till date the death mounting to 25, Opposition were baying for his scalp.
Briefing media at the State Secretariat here in the evening a short while from now, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said, "Mr Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak has sent me his letter of resignation. He has resigned on moral grounds. I've accepted his resignation and sent his letter onto the Hon'ble Governor."
Governor of Odisha S.C. Jamir accepted the resignation of Atanu.
Sword of Damocles was dangling on his head following the mounting death toll due to the killer Japanese Encephalitis in Malkangiri. But, he became the sore of eyes of the Opposition in the aftermath of the SUM Hospital horror.
Commenting on the Health Minister’s resignation, Odisha BJP President Basant Panda said Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik should not escape from owning responsibility.
The Chief Minister should also resign on moral grounds, Panda demanded.
Senior Congress leader Tara Prasad Bahinipati said: “Not only ministers, all concerned bureaucrats are too responsible for the deaths. Stringent action must be taken against all.”
Worthwhile to mention, Opposition members had been alleging that Nayak had done undue favours to Sum authorities in obtaining necessary NOCs as his wife was employed in an educational institute run by the same group that runs the hospital.
