One Child, One Plant: Capital Hospital’s Unique Initiative Is A Hit With New Parents | Odisha News
Bhubaneswar: The birth of a child is an occasion to celebrate. And, what better way to do it by welcoming not one but two lives on the same day. 'Shishu Tiye, Gacha Tiye' (One Child, One Plant) is a unique initiative started by government-run Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar that encourages new parents to mark the joyous day by planting a sapling.
Dr Ashok Patnaik Director of the Hospital explained, “Mothers, who are delivering newborns, are being presented with a sapling. We are doing this to establish a direct emotional connection between mother and the plant. While receiving the sapling, the mother feels that the plant is her child too. This will encourage her to care for the sapling and her child in the same manner.”
The program was brought around on the occasion of plantation month that is being observed by Odisha Forest Department. After the damage caused by Cyclone FANI, the Forest department is pulling all strings to revive the lost green cover and Capital Hospital decided to collaborate with them. The program is a positive step towards that.
“The Divisional Forest Officer has supplied us with 300 free plants in the first phase. Every day, Capital Hospital sees at least 30 deliveries and all these families are provided with a sapling when the mothers are discharged. We began the program from July 8 onwards and it has been very successful,” Patnaik added.
