Abolition Of Hereditary Sevaks From Puri Srimandir Is Very Tough To Comply & Seems Impossible Now: Bijoy Mohapatra
Bhubaneswar: In the wake of the Supreme Court’s latest suggestion on ‘Abolition of Hereditary Sevaks/ Appointment of Sevaks’ and as it has sparked off grumblings among the Puri Jagannath Temple servitors, former Odisha minister and senior BJP leader Bijoy Mohapatra on Saturday opined that it is a very tough matter to comply as well as seems impossible under the present
scenario.
Convening a press meet, the senior political leader said, “Everyone wishes that there should be discipline in Jagannath Temple as well as its management. I hope the present order of Supreme Court will help such a move.”
But he argued, “Jagannath Temple is the one and only temple in India, 120 ‘nitis’ (riyuals of the deities) are solemnized till date. No other Indian temple witnesses or solemnizes 120 nitis.”
He explained, “The hon’ble Supreme Court in its judgement has mentioned something important about the temple. There is a yawning gap and difference between the other Indian temples and our Puri Jagannath Temple. The first suggestion has been put forth is that of ‘Abolition of Hereditary Sevaks/Appointment of Sevaks’. It has sparked off reactions in Puri.”
