Odisha: Habishyalis Throng Pilgrim Spots With Onset Of Kartika Month

Bhubaneswar/Puri: The holy ‘Kartika’ month is here. To observe the month-long Kartika ‘Brata’, thousands of ‘Habishyalis’ (widows) thronged pilgrim town Puri and Lingaraj temple in capital city to observe austerity and offer special puja during the month.

According to reports, around 2500 have registered for availing provisions in government facilities under ‘Kartik Habisa Brata Yojana’ scheme this year. Elaborate arrangements have been made by the Puri district administration to facilitate incident-free puja rituals of the Habishyalis.

The arrangement for the ‘habishyalis’ have also been made in a bid to ensure that the elderly widows do not spend sleepless nights along Grand Road braving biting cold of the month. Habishyali Kendras (centers) have also been set up at four places in Puri town– Sri Jagannath Ballav mutt, Muncipality Kalyan Mandap, East Coast Railway tourist shelter and Bhakta Nivas.
