Odia Weightlifter & CWG Gold Medalist K Ravi Kumar Fails Dope Test, Provisionally Suspended
Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s well-known weightlifter Ravi Kumar Katulu has been provisionally suspended by National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) for anti-doping rule violation. His sample that was collected during 71st Men and 34th Women Senior National Weightlifting Championship in Visakhapatnam earlier this year, failed the dope test, informed NADA on Monday.
Hailing from Berhampur, Kumar has won many awards in his career including three gold medals in 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. He also competed for India in the 2012 Summer Olympics. Kumar has also been appointed as an officer in the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Odisha.
In the fresh list published by NADA, several other weightlifters and track and field athletes’ names have surfaced who have resorted to using banned substances for performance enhancement. Among other prominent names are Penang Junior Commonwealth Championships 2016 gold winner weightlifter Purnima Pandey, Patiala Federation Cup and Guwahati Inter-state athletics meet 2018 gold medallist discus thrower Dharam Raj Yadav and New Delhi elite women's half marathon 2019 winner Jyoti Singh. Jyoti’s gold medal might be stripped off.
